The NTU Alumni Sports Fiesta gets alumni's adrenalin flowing, as they outdo one another in sports.

Whether it is a game of 5-a-side soccer, 4x100m relay run, 3-on-3 basketball, badminton, or table tennis, the NTU Alumni Sports Fiesta really gets them going. Age, notwithstanding. The alumni, who took part, were out to outdo one another. All in the name of competition and a healthy dose of interest.

Close to 300 participants attended the Sports Fiesta. Third in its series, the event was launched four years ago to bring together sports enthusiasts, who have been into the pursuit of sports even during varsity days. The Fiesta was held in the morning of 21 March amid plenty of sunshine and fair weather, at NTU's Sports and Recreation Centre (SRC).

Guest-of-honour Mr Anthony Teo, Secretary to the University, kicks off the Sports Fiesta, literally, when he declared that the games were officially starting, with a kick of the soccer ball into the goal.

The first game – 4x100m relay run – was keenly fought. The sight of the top three runners, lunging towards the finishing line within split seconds of one another, was quite something to behold. Following the run, participants headed off to play the games they had signed up for, at the various sites within SRC.

Some alumni participants were in fact regulars. They shared that they look forward to the Sports Fiesta eagerly every year. Mr Chua Kang Cheh, alumnus from the Class of 1977, was there with his fellow tennis team-mate, Mr Tan Chian Huat. "I had the chance to play with my fellow alumni friends (at the Sports Fiesta), some of whom are my seniors. Right now, I still play tennis, regularly. My friends and I would gather for a game or two during the weekend," said Mr Chua. He and his team-mate competed in the tennis doubles for participants above the age of 45.

The duo was actually competing with their university mates, Mr Alex Khoo and Dr Yap Kim Yew. Dr Yap, 71, who was from the Class of 1962, was the day's most senior participant. He is also our regular Fiesta winner! Dr Yap was on the mark again this time round. He and Mr Khoo took home the first prize in their category. Mr Khoo was from the Class of 1980.

As the Fiesta came to a close, participants gathered around for the prize presentation. Attractive cash prizes were given out; thereafter a sumptuous buffet lunch followed. Participants unanimously agreed that it was indeed a wonderful Saturday morning!
