Class Agents attend a special Chinese New Year gathering planned in their honour.
The University expressed appreciation for Class Agents on 19 February 2008 with a Chinese New Year Gathering at the NTU Alumni Club at NTU's one-north campus.
At the gathering of about 160 Class Agents organised by the Alumni Affairs Office (AAO), guest of honour, NTU President Dr Su Guaning extolled the virtues of the Class Agents, AAO's Director Mr Soon Min Yam talked at length about the roles of the AAO, and First Vice President of the NTU Alumni Club Mr Jeffrey Chua shared about the history, development and facilities of the clubhouse.
"Alumni are an important part of the NTU community. We appreciate very much the spirit of volunteerism that our Class Agents have displayed in connecting and uniting all NTU alumni," said Dr Su in honouring them. "Since the start of the Class Agent programme in January 2006, we have a dramatic improvement in our ability to locate a large majority of our alumni. You have provided us the link to these valuable alumni networks."
"You have worked tirelessly to build and strengthen our alumni network. This large network has grown to a strength of 113,000. It is heartening to see 550 alumni coming forward to volunteer as Class Agents! Gathered today, we have Class Agents from the 60s all the way to the 2007 graduates. This clearly shows the deep connections among our alumni from all eras, very much a part of our vibrant and colourful history," he added.
The Class Agents present that evening demonstrated their motivation and commitment to support their alma mater through their service – a very worthy cause. Mdm Chang Wan How, an Arts graduate from the Class of 1980 and a Class Agent since the programme started in 2006, said, "I volunteered to be a Class Agent to help get my classmates back together. I'm always comforted to see my old friends and find out how they are doing."
Compared to Mdm Chang, Yohanest Chandra, a recent 2007 graduate from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, may not have as much experience as a Class Agent but nonetheless, his enthusiasm was as genuine and palpable. "I have just volunteered to become a Class Agent as I recently graduated in 2007. I am trying to get more involved as a Class Agent, and for a start, I am contacting my friends to come together and form a team for the upcoming Alumni Sports Fiesta!" he said.
Tucking into a traditional "lo hei" meal followed by a buffet dinner, the guests enjoyed dance performances from the student members of NTU's Cultural Activities Club and alumni. The gathering also saw interested guests going on a guided tour around the clubhouse.
