Remembering old friends, cherishing past treasures

The Classes of 1963 and 1968 return to NTU to celebrate their 40th and 45th class anniversaries on 21 June.

Graduates of 1963 and 1968, endearingly referred to as the old boys and girls of Nanyang University, came together to reminisce about their alma mater and the changes it has undergone in the past 45 years. While the university has changed tremendously, the feelings the alumni have for their alma mater seemed to have remained unchanged; if the obvious display of camaraderie at the anniversary reunion was anything to go by.

Arriving for the anniversary registration, fellow alumni greeted each other like long lost friends. Some had flown in from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Penang, for this rare chance to catch up.

Soon they were reminiscing about their yesteryears, as they chatted away happily and posed with one another for the cameras. Flashes went wild and excitement was everywhere.

There to make the anniversary celebration more meaningful was NTU President Dr Su Guaning. Dr Su gave a speech to thank the alumni for doing the University proud and for helping it to achieve its current status. He also commended the alumni for their unity, friendship and cooperative spirit. Along with the alumni, Dr Su witnessed the laying of their class plaques on the Quad. The Quad is a symbolic site built, where  respective plaques could be laid, to commemorate the year each class graduates in.

Naturally, the reunion would not be complete without the sharing of the Nantah days. Dr Leong Poo Chow (Biology/1963), the emcee for the evening, shared the past fondly with those present. Atmosphere became charged when the crowd was led by a group of NTU Chinese Society students to sing Chuan Deng.

The alumni members of the respective 1963 and 1968 classes were also led on a campus tour, where they got an update on the latest buildings being built amidst those of the Nantah days. They were further updated through videos, which showcased the University's latest news and developments.

Those who came for the reunion - 120 alumni, including spouses - clearly enjoyed the night. Many left the Nanyang Auditorium, where the anniversary was held, with renewed zest to engage their alma mater, rekindle friendships and cherish precious memories.
