NTU student tops cohort at Britannia Royal Naval College

The 21-year-old outperforms 92 students and is named International Young Officer of 2005 at the prestigious school for naval cadets in Dartmouth, UK.

Chew Chun Cheong from the School of Biological Sciences has done Singapore and NTU proud by emerging tops in his naval training class in Britain and winning the prestigious "Admiralty Binoculars" award.

The third Singaporean to receive the honour, Chun Cheong will serve in the navy when he graduates. His prize - the Admiralty Binoculars - was presented to him by the British High Commissioner to Singapore, His Excellency Sir Alan Collins, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.

Says Chun Cheong, whose one-year course at the naval college ended in June last year: "I am overwhelmed and very happy to receive this award. Initially when I went over, I only thought about training and interacting with the other young officers from around the world."

Chun Cheong adds that the award will serve as a good confidence booster for him when he enters the Republic of Singapore Navy.
