The Class of 1964 and 1969 reunite in celebration of their special anniversaries.
Theirs was certainly a reunion worth celebrating.
Alumnus Dr Ng Gek Boo (Commerce/1969), who flew in from Kuching, Sarawak, felt the Nantah spirit soaring once again when gathering with fellow alumni of the pioneer batches. For the seasoned traveller, it was a good chance for him to visit old friends at the gathering and in Singapore.
Fellow alumnus, Mr Neo Poh Kian (Science/1969), had a chance to not only revisit Yunnan Garden, where he once studied and thereafter taught, but also a chance to thank his alma mater for coming to his aid in his moment of needs. Mr Neo lost the use of his limbs when he met with a traffic accident some years back, which aggravated his spinal condition – a rare disease called Ossification Posterior Longitudinal Ligament. He had written to Dr Su Guaning, NTU President, to request for help to create a device that could facilitate his rehabilitation.
Mr Neo shared at the reunion how Dr Su had replied his email within the same day, to his utter surprise. He said: "I am touched by the willingness of the University to fulfill my request. I am especially glad to be able to personally thank Dr Su at this reunion. I also find the reunion significant, as former classmates and teachers were able to gather to recall the old days spent at Yunnan Garden." Adding in jest, he said: "Most of us are already over 60s and have more grey hairs."
That the reunion was enjoyed by many is thanks to the reunion committee's leading men, Chairman, Mr Foo Kok Pheow (Physics/1964) and Vice-chairman, Mr Chua Gim Siong (Commerce/1969). Having alumni organising their own reunion makes it that much more meaningful. Both Mr Foo and Mr Chua expressed their excitement at being able to do their bit for old friends. They also expressed their gratitude towards their alma mater.
The reunion also saw the traditional laying of plaques at the Quad in NTU for the two classes. Representatives from the Class of 1964 and 1969 laid their respective plaques in the presence of special guests, including Dr Su and Senior Associate Provost, Prof Er Meng Hwa.
Dr Su expressed his delight on seeing the strong support rendered by those who came. He went around offering a toast to every table and encouraging alumni to stay connected with NTU.
The reunion was held on Saturday 16 May at NTU's Nanyang Auditorium Foyer. It was attended by 166 alumni and their partners.
