  Alumni network expands in China

NTU launches two more alumni associations, bringing the total number of China chapters to 12.

NTU launched two more alumni associations – Sichuan on 31 May and Hunan on 13 June – increasing their number to 12 being set up in China. The two cater to the growing number of alumni in China now totalling more than 10,000 from NTU's 122,000 alumni strong global network.

Launch of NTU Alumni Association (Sichuan)
Celebrating, yet remembering. The launch of NTU Alumni Association (Sichuan) was thus officiated. During the launch, Dr Su Guaning, NTU President, alluded to the Sichuan earthquake in his opening address. Dr Su lauded the NTU alumni who had lent a helping hand in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake, in particular Mr Mao Yibing, Magistrate, Pingwu County in Sichuan. Mr Mao led the county's rescue team to scour for survivors after the quake and was himself wounded in the process.

Dr Su also cited over 400 EMBA alumni and students from NTU who had donated generously and set up Nanyang Love and Care Education Fund to rebuild a local primary school. Yet another three NTU alumni – Messrs Ma Bo, Sun Bo and Xie Min – were also mentioned for providing a much needed solution to Sichuan's "water dilemma" through their combined research paper.

Mr Ma, who is also the President of the NTU Alumni Association (Sichuan), took the chance to pay homage to his alma mater in his welcoming speech, representing the more than 100 NTU alumni based in Sichuan. The launch of the association was celebrated by over 150 guests, comprising Singapore's Consul to Chengdu, Ms Soh Swee Ping; the Chinese leaders of the Sichuan province; as well as NTU alumni from Beijing, Shanghai and Shandong. It was held at Chengdu City.

Launch of NTU Alumni Association (Hunan)
"The launch of the NTU Alumni Association (Hunan) is significant for it provides a platform for overseas alumni to network, learn from one another and cooperate," said Dr Su Guaning, NTU President. Dr Su set the tone, whilst addressing over 100 alumni and guests who attended the launch of NTU's twelfth alumni chapter in China. He also revealed future plans to set up alumni association in Fujian, Hebei and Yunnan, respectively.

Sharing his enthusiasm, Mr He Anjie, the President of NTU Alumni Association (Hunan), said: "The setting up of alumni association such as ours will promote friendship and unity among fellow alumni and deepen our sense of belonging to our alma mater." Mr He went on to encourage alumni based in Hunan to actively participate in the events organised by the association and NTU.

All who were present at the launch got the chance to be among the firsts to be invited to attend a homecoming event – NTU Alumni Day 2009 – to be held over three days from 23 to 25 October. Indeed, the association is proving to be an invaluable point of contact for NTU alumni overseas so they are kept up-to-date on activities, as well as developments at NTU.

NTU's 10 other China chapters were previously established in Beijing, Chongqing, Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong, Shanghai, and Zhejiang.
