Building on shared goals and aspirations, NTU and Technische Universität München (TUM) take their engagement to the next level with the launch of student and faculty exchange programmes.

On 25 May, NTU President Dr Su Guaning and Dr Wolfgang A Herrmann, President of TUM, a leading German research university, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster faculty and student exchanges.

The MOU paves the way for the two institutions to build on their strong ties, by promoting international cooperation through the exchange of scientific information, including research publications, and joint research in areas of common interest. The partnership will also facilitate the exchange of faculty and students between the two universities, for research and study.

"Through this MOU, we hope to strengthen our relationship further, especially in the area of student exchange, which will provide students from both universities a unique cross-cultural learning experience," said NTU President Dr Su Guaning.

NTU and TUM are already co-partners in education, having developed joint Master of Science programmes in Microelectronics and IC Design. The Master of Science in Microelectronics focuses on training engineers for work in the silicon wafer fabrication industry, while the Master of Science (IC Design) has a strong technical emphasis on both the theory and practice of integrated circuit design. A joint Master of Science programme in Aerospace Engineering and joint PhD programme are in the pipeline.

One of Germany's leading universities, TUM was founded as a "polytechnic school" at the heart of Europe in 1868 and is today a top research university with core strengths in the engineering sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, and economic sciences. It was selected as an "Elite University" in 2006 by the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) and the German Research Foundation, and remains dedicated to the ideal of a top-level research-based entrepreneurial university.

In 2005, NTU's National Institute of Education and TUM signed a three-year MOU to operationalise plans related to the exchange of faculty and students, joint research, participation in seminars and the development of joint postgraduate programmes.
