Close to 250 international alumni gather for an evening of networking at the third International Alumni Get-together.
Organised by the Alumni Affairs Office and held at the NTU Alumni Club located at NTU's one-north campus on 16 May, the cheery gathering was a well-received affair that saw a diverse group of alumni attending.
Close to 20% of our total alumni population are from overseas, and for the gathering, there were alumni from countries such as China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, India, Pakistan, among many others. The good composite of international alumni brought along a rich mix of cultures at the lunch.
Guest-of-honour Professor Er Meng Hwa, Associate Provost, addressed the alumni and highlighted to them the important role that the international alumni play.
"As we move forward, the university is becoming a global university with strengths in science and technology. As alumni, you are a crucial pillar to propel the university to global excellence. Upon graduation, you go out to the working world and make a name for yourself. You become an inspiration and this support of yours is critical to uplift the name of the university. In turn, the university's growing reputation will also make you proud to be our alumni," he said
Added Prof Er, "We wish to mould and cultivate our networks of alumni so as to develop strong relationships with each other and with the alma mater. You are our alumni, and this is a lifelong relationship you maintain with your alma mater. We will continue to stay in touch with you and there will be instances when we wish to engage you in the development of the University. I would like to encourage you to come forward and participate actively in the various events and initiatives that have been planned as your contribution as alumni is important. I sincerely hope that as you embark your life journey globally, you would continue to remember your alma mater as we continue our drive to excel as a Global University of Excellence."
The evening gave the alumni an opportunity to make new acquaintances from various parts of the world and many were seeing chitchatting and exchanging namecards. They were also treated to dance performances from the NTU Dance Sport Academy and the NTU Cultural Activities Club Chinese Dance Club; as well as an unforgettable 2-song performance by Prof Er, which received overwhelming applause.
"I thank the Alumni Affairs Office for arranging this event. I enjoyed myself tonight and was glad to have the chance to meet some of my former classmates and make new friends. The food and performances were great as well!" said Mr Inam Nutkani, a Pakistani from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering's Class of 2007.
Everyone had a great time networking and the contended smiles on everyone's faces were a clear indicator of the event's success.
