The university is one of two tertiary institutions in Southeast Asia selected to participate in DreamSpark, a new global software giveaway programme by Microsoft.
NTU is among the first tertiary institutions in Southeast Asia to participate in DreamSpark, a software giveaway programme currently available to more than 35 million college students across Europe, Asia and the United States.
At a ceremony held on 10 April, NTU's Senior Associate Provost Prof Er Meng Hwa, Mr Joseph P Mullinix, Deputy President of the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Mr Barney Lau, Managing Director of Microsoft Singapore, inked a Memorandum of Understanding, formalising the plan to give students access to the latest Microsoft developer and designer tools at no charge.
The initiative offers students free downloads of Microsoft's leading professional tools consisting of a broad range of development and designing software. The suite includes programming software such as Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition, Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, and designer tools like Expression Studio (comprising Expression Web, Expression Blend, Expression Design and Expression Media) as well as Microsoft platform resources such as Windows Server, Standard Edition.
For NTU students, the freebies mean they can now try their hand at programming, inventing compelling new gaming content, or designing websites enhanced with digital content and animation. They could even create their own Facebook application. The broad aim is to empower young talents to unlock their creative potential and achieve academic and career success.
Says Prof Er: "For students, getting their first job after graduation is of utmost importance. With DreamSpark, they have an excellent opportunity to get up to speed with the IT skills they need to jumpstart their careers."
