For the third year running, the Andrew Fraser Prize has been awarded to a graduate student from the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE).
Presented by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Singapore Branch, the Andrew Fraser Prize aims to recognise excellence in postgraduate research in Mechanical Engineering.
It is awarded through a national competition open to graduate students of both NTU and the National University of Singapore (NUS) under the age of 31. NTU's MAE has won all three prizes since the contest was inaugurated in 2003.
In the final round of this year's competition, six students from NTU and NUS each presented a research project to a panel of independent judges from IMechE comprising representatives from NTU, NUS and industry.
MAE's Teh Yong Liang, who eventually won, showcased a novel rotary compressing mechanism that is more efficient than existing compressors. As part of his presentation - entitled "The Development of the Twin-Precession Compressor" - he outlined a theoretical framework for assessing the performance of the machine.
A PCT patent has been filed for the design.
Yong Liang is currently pursuing research in Thermofluids Engineering towards a PhD degree under the supervision of Assoc Prof Ooi Kim Tiow.
