Two recent publications by educators from NTU’s National Institute of Education (NIE) aim to empower teachers and advance learning in the classroom.
Teaching English to Chinese ESL Students: Classroom Practices This book, edited by Ms Kwah Poh Foong and Mr Michael Vallance from NIE’s English Language & Literature Academic Group, is a compilation of articles covering ten years of language teaching at NIE.
It provides unique insights with a view to helping students from China become better communicators and listeners, especially in an academic setting.
The 196-page book, which is sold at the NIE Campus Book Centre, is targeted at pre- and in-service English teachers involved in coaching Chinese students at the tertiary level.
Besides an overview of English language education in China, the book covers topics such as communicative debates, listening logs, reading, academic writing, peer review techniques, digital literacy skills, and self-access learning.
Interactive Learning for School Leaders Written by Asst Prof David Ng, Associate Dean, Leadership Programmes, this book, spanning 184 pages, discusses the effectiveness of interactive intelligent computer simulation systems as an instructional tool for teaching school leadership.
It demonstrates how such simulations enable school leaders to acquire leadership skills on their own.
The book features a stand-alone problem-based interactive learning tool – Making Change Happen! – which has been used by the author to teach change leadership to numerous leaders in Singapore and other parts of the world.
