The ‘Grid’ concept is motivated by the need for coordinating resource sharing and problem solving in dynamic environments. Collaboration lies at the heart of Grid computing. This collaboration and sharing is, necessarily, highly controlled, with resource providers and consumers’ levels of authority and accessibility clearly defined. A set of individuals and/or institutions defined by such sharing rules form what is commonly called a virtual organization (VO).

With respect to our interests, we regard a VO as a marketplace where organizations can trade and share Grid-based resources. In view of this, it is necessary to have tools that can monitor, meter and account for the resource usage in such a collaborative Grid environment where disparate resources can be pooled together. In this project, a Grid Accounting System funded by the National Grid office was developed and is currently deployed in the Nanyang Campus Grid (http://www.ntu-cg.ntu.edu.sg). The system is able to capture Grid jobs information, organize and store the information into a relational database, and support analysis and visualization of the data through the Web.

The Grid Monitoring System was built on top of the Globus core: Grid File Transfer Protocol (GridFTP), Grid Resource Allocation Manager (GRAM) and Grid Security Infrastructure (GSI). At each of the grid computing resources, Globus core calls are used where possible and wrappers were developed where necessary.
“As more research projects are collaborative in nature and stretch across multiple organizations utilizing Grid technology, it becomes essential for the resource owners to monitor their resource usages.”
